My Personal Variations of Bulletproof Coffee

May 16, 2019

Bulletrproof coffee was started by Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Radio and Bulletproofexecutive.com.  His podcast is very informative and fun to listen to, and is actually what got me started on my own person biohacking journey in 2012.

The word "biohacker", by the way, is now in the dictionary, thanks to Dave Asprey.  It is defined as somebody who uses science and technology to make his or her body function better and more efficiently.

I like to think of a biohacker as one who manipulates their internal and external environmental factors to seize control of their own biology.  Which is exactly what I've been trying to do after a major jaw surgery - hack the healing process to optimize it.

My post-surgical biohacks so far have been many.  I've touched on a number of these in previous posts, but a big part of my biohacking protocol has included food and supplements.  After double jaw surgery, I was on a liquid diet for longer than I was told I had to be, mostly because of severe TMD which made even light chewing very difficult.  So my morning coffee ritual became even more important to me than it had before, and sometimes substituted for lunch as well.

For bulletproof coffee, see the official recipe below or look here.

I follow this recipe for the most part, but then doctor mine up with some special additives.

Note that I make a fairly large amount of coffee every morning.  Enough for 3 adults, although my husband and I just split it since it's all we eat for breakfast.  Also because it's delicious so we always want extra.  We both find that if we use this as our breakfast that we won't be hungry until around 1pm or so.

I'll do a separate recipe for a smaller batch at the end of the post.

For post-surgery, here's what I blend with 16 ounces of fresh brewed Bulletproof Original Coffee:

  • 3 Tablespoons of Kerrygold grass fed butter

  • 1 Tablespoon of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil

  • 2 scoops of Bulletproof Collagen Powder, which is 22g of protein.

  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil

  • 1 teaspoon of Lakanto monkfruit drinking chocolate

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ceylon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon NewChapter fermented turmeric

  • 1 teaspoon NewChapter fermented aloe

It's easy enough to leave out the peppermint oil if you want it more like a mocha or leave out the drinking chocolate if you aren't into that either.  Also the cinnamon, turmeric, and aloe are optional.  I do find that the cinnamon adds to the flavor, but in my opinion the turmeric and aloe do detract from it a bit - I only add them for added health benefits.

Over time, I've toyed around with a few other versions of this.  The simplest, most delicious version in my humble opinion is the following:

  •  16 ounces of Bulletproof Original Coffee

  • 3 Tablespoons of Kerrygold grass fed butter

  • 1 Tablespoon of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil

  • 3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil (must use a high quality food grade oil - I use DoTerra)

  • 1.5 Tablespoons Bulletproof Chocolate Collage

For whatever version you try, make sure to use a good blender and get it nice and frothy.  I always blend everything except the collagen and then add that at the end and only pulse it, as the collagen may break down too much if over-blended.

Ok, as promised, here's the basic recipe for a smaller batch:

  • 8 ounces of Bulletproof Original Coffee

  • 1-1.5 Tablespoons of Kerrygold grass fed butter

  • .5-1 Tablespoon of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil

  • 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil (must use a high quality food grade oil - I use DoTerra)

  • 1 Tablespoon Bulletproof Chocolate Collagen

I've been having one version or another of Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast every morning for over 4 years now.  The only exceptions are when I'm water-only fasting or when traveling and didn't plan accordingly.  Although I have been known to travel with Kerrygold butter and other coffee-making accoutrements before.  After you try it and love it I think you'll know why...
